Classical music recordings

To record music one must be good a engineer of course, but we have to be musicians as well. Using multi microphone techniques and multi track systems we tend to spread microphones throughout the recording hall and rely on postproduction. This is not enough. A recording also involves:

  • Knowledge of acoustics. The room is an instrument, and you must know how to interpret it. Like the other instruments there are good and bad rooms, and in each case it is necessary to get the best you can out of it.
  • Acquaintance with the musicians. We must know the score very well since many decisions have to be taken before and during the recording session
  • Use of proper tools: the most important devices on a recording session are the microphones. (I did not believe it until I got my Schoeps pair)
